Students will develop an understanding of the Israeli economy both from an historical perspective and from a contemporary viewpoint. The course begins with a review of the growth of the economy in Israel and the surrounding areas from the 16th century to the founding of the State of Israel in 1948. Then we take a more detailed look at the changes and developments in the Israeli economy from 1948 through 2020 with an emphasis on the development of the high-tech sector in Israel. We will discuss how COVID-19 has affected Israel’s economy and what’s in store regarding Israel’s economic prospects in the future.
Additionally, students will gain an awareness of some of the economic issues that currently face Israel’s Arab neighbors. In this section, we begin with the development of the economy in the West Bank and Gaza from 1967 to the present. We then turn to brief discussions of the Egyptian, Jordanian, Lebanese, Syrian, and Saudi Arabian economies. In these discussions, the focus is on recent changes, including the effects of COVID-19, that have occurred in the different economies. Within the context of our discussion on Saudi Arabia, we also examine the oil market and its effect on the region.
