Fatima Amer is a third-year B.A. student at Bar-Ilan University’s International School. She is studying Communications and English Literature. While she has enjoyed her courses tremendously, she believes there is way more to studying than the subjects you take.
“Bar-Ilan University has taught me so much, not just in class, but also through the different people I have met and the various cultures I have discovered,” she said. “Bar-Ilan is full of students and lecturers from all corners of the earth. It’s amazing and so much fun.”
Bar-Ilan University is consistently ranked in the top 2% of all universities throughout the world. It has one of the largest campuses in Israel, and is located in Ramat Gan, in the metropolitan area of Tel Aviv. The university welcomes about 900 students to the International School every year.
All of Bar-Ilan’s degrees are recognized internationally, and the degree programs are open to students from all over the world. The university offers more than your chosen degree. It provides each student with the chance to develop professionally and individually.
“I loved the openness of the campus and the people,” said Gavriel Yisrael Jankelowitz, a former Biotechnology student from South Africa. “I was mesmerized by the vibe on campus.”
Studying in English can be a challenge, especially for the non-English-speaking students. However, the faculty and staff at the International School do everything they can to help students cope. But all students understand there is an enormous benefit to studying in English as it builds up an essential skill for their future.
“The first day of school, I was scared because I wasn’t a native English speaker,” said Fatima. “But, after being supported by the school and the other students, today, I can say that I am bilingual.”
The professors and other lecturers at Bar-Ilan University also come from different backgrounds and countries.
“One professor, an award-winning author, devotes hours each week to one-on-one editing sessions with his students,” said Minna Shezaf, currently registered for the Master’s degree in Creative Writing. “I can’t believe the level of attention and care we are given.”
The International School also gives foreign students the chance to mingle with Israeli students and join the Israeli society, which is a blend of cultural diversity. This is the ideal opportunity to learn from people with different backgrounds and different cultures.
“Bar-Ilan has given me a fascinating look into Israeli life,” said Miriam Blum, a third-year American student, who has made Aliyah (immigrated to Israel). “Being here has enabled me to experience life in Israeli society and see how vibrant and full it is.”
Studying abroad can be difficult financially for some students. As a result, the university has made various scholarships available for international students. However, for some, studying in Israel will have enormous financial benefits as the cost is much lower than it would be in certain places, like North America.
Bar-Ilan University is open to students from all backgrounds and religions, all of whom are able to study any degree of their choice, with or without Jewish studies. Jewish students, most of whom are taking at least one course in Jewish studies, appreciate the link between a universal education and the study of Torah, plus the combination of tradition and the ethics of Jewish heritage with modern technology. This helps strengthen their experience of studying in Israel at Bar-Ilan.
“I chose Bar-Ilan because it personifies the wonderful duality of ‘Torah u’Madah’ (Torah and Science),” added Miriam.
The International School’s office is a welcoming space for students during working hours, and there are dedicated staff members who will happily answer students’ questions about their degrees, courses, dorms, social lives, and anything else they wish to know.
“As a student, the International School made the process of first applying to BIU so smooth and simple, it was a pleasure,” Miriam said. “But it doesn’t end there. Once you become a student, they are there for you every step of the way.”
Choosing to study abroad has its advantages and benefits. It allows students to expand their horizons and to build a network of friends for life.
“I’m grateful I chose Bar-Ilan because I ended up meeting amazing people who I have become very close with and count as my own family,” said Fatima.
