Ofer Dahan, Executive Director of BIU’s International School, worked closely together with Prof. Moshe Lewenstein during his tenure as Deputy President of Bar-Ilan University—from before the International School’s official opening at the beginning of the 2018-2019 academic year. Dahan considers him a colleague and a close friend.
In the fast-paced world of academia and project development, reflecting on a partnership that spans over six years is no small feat. The journey has been filled with both initiated and uninitiated events, creating a dizzying but rewarding experience. In this tribute, I want to highlight my collaboration with a remarkable individual, Prof. Moshe Lewenstein, whose influence has been profound and transformative.

At first glance, you’re met with a warm smile and a pleasant demeanor. But soon, you come to realize the extraordinary personality in front of you. Moshe is sharp, focused, and detail-oriented—a true powerhouse wrapped in a friendly exterior. He’s the kind of person who achieves everything he sets out to do.
Throughout our partnership, I found myself alongside an incredible travel companion. I’m not sure if I found him or if he found me, but what I do know is that this has been a remarkable partnership built on transparency, sharing, brainstorming, planning, and a mutual commitment to our goals.
Moshe’s empowering presence extends beyond our collaboration. I’ve observed this same behavior in his interactions with others. He naturally elevates those around him, fostering an atmosphere of excellence where people truly thrive. His leadership style is quiet yet impactful, encouraging a culture of growth and success.

Our accomplishments together are numerous: from establishing the International School and international programs to youth development initiatives, the construction of the computer science building, and the Responsa Project: the Global Jewish Database, to advancements in Business Intelligence (BI) and securing vital donations. I can confidently say that I found a true partner for deep discussions and reflection.
Moshe is a man rich in experiences. When traveling abroad, he prepares thoroughly, delving into various subjects and presenting them from multiple angles. His personal stories are woven with historical and social contexts, making every discussion enlightening.
His curiosity is complemented by a hands-on approach. His office walls are filled with scribbles that he claims are formulas where he’s uncovered errors. Yet, he balances his academic pursuits with real-world adventures, like moving rocks in a desert stream.
Not only is he serious about his work, but he also possesses a subtle sense of humor that makes collaboration enjoyable. Moshe radiates humanity in everything he does. He is a true Zionist, deeply connected to his country and its people. He is someone you’d want by your side during both challenging and joyful moments.
Coming from a large extended family, Moshe has an uncanny ability to know everyone by name and their place in the world. Within him lies a rich tapestry of cultures—Americans, Swiss, and Israeli—representing the diverse worlds from which he draws and grows.
As I reflect on these six years of close work, I am filled with gratitude. How do you sum up such an experience? With thanks, and with the hope for many more years of collaboration ahead.
