As the 2024–2025 academic year dawned at Bar-Ilan University, the campus once again came alive with the vibrant presence of thousands of students and researchers. Among them were nearly 800 international students hailing from more than 60 countries, all eager to embark on their academic journeys in Israel. These students received a warm introduction to Bar-Ilan at the university’s annual Orientation Day, where faculty and staff introduced them to the wealth of resources and support systems available to them.

Held on October 30, Orientation Day provided a comprehensive program, featuring service booths, meet-and-greet sessions with university departments, and engaging speeches from key figures, all designed to help students feel at home and adjust to life in a new country.
Oz Nacker, Director of Student Exchange at the International School and the Master of Ceremonies for the opening event, welcomed the students, saying, “You are not just joining an academic institution; you are becoming part of a vibrant community that values diversity and mutual support.”
Braving New Frontiers in Challenging Times
Prof. Rivka Tuval-Mashiach, Bar-Ilan’s Vice President for Internationalization and the Third Mission, acknowledged the unique backdrop of this year’s start: “You come to us to study in a somewhat challenging time where Israel is at war. I’m sure some of you or your parents may have hesitated about whether it’s safe enough to be here,” she said. Prof. Tuval-Mashiach emphasized that, despite these challenges, Bar-Ilan continues its academic mission steadfastly.

She encouraged students to immerse themselves fully in the rich cultural tapestry of Israel and to approach their time here with openness and curiosity. “Studying in a new country is a very special experience. You need to adapt, make new friends, and navigate new academic landscapes—but we are here for you,” she reassured them.
Support Systems for Every Step of the Journey
Ofer Dahan, Executive Director of the International School, provided insight into the program’s growth. “When we started in 2018 with just 50 students, we could never have imagined reaching nearly 800 students today. This growth reflects our expanding global reach and the desire of students worldwide to experience what Bar-Ilan has to offer,” he stated. Dahan emphasized the robust support systems in place, highlighting the student exchange program that allows students to study abroad while earning credits.

“The International School acts as an umbrella organization, developing new programs, reaching out to prospective students worldwide, and supporting you through every stage of your academic journey,” Dahan explained. “We’re here for you at every turn,” he assured them, reinforcing the message of community and accessibility.
Enriching Academic and Social Life
A central aspect of the international students’ experience is integrating into Bar-Ilan’s vibrant social and academic community. Hadar Giat, Director of Student Affairs and Well-being, and her assistant, Daniel Benvenisty, outlined various programs, from Jewish Studies courses specifically designed for international students to social activities like trips across Israel and cultural workshops.
“Our goal is to create a sense of community and friendship among our international students. We have planned a series of cultural workshops and excursions that will not only enhance your academic experience but also help you build lasting connections,” said Giat. She also spoke about a leadership initiative for students to foster connections and take on active roles within their community, stating, “This is a great opportunity to make an impact and create positive change.”
Equipping Students for Success with Practical Support
To help international students navigate both academic and daily life at Bar-Ilan, Zvi Swisa, the International School’s Academic Advisor, provided an overview of essential tools and resources. Highlighting the need for flexibility due to current events, Swisa reassured students that Bar-Ilan has implemented systems to ensure continued learning. “All lectures will be recorded to accommodate students who may face challenges attending in person,” he said. “This is our commitment to your education, even in uncertain times.”
Swisa mentioned the essential digital tools designed to streamline the student’s academic experience. These include a free Microsoft 365 account, the BIU Mobile App, which helps students navigate the campus and is home to student IDs; the MyBIU Hub and InBar platform, which streamlines course registration, schedules, and grades, among other things, and the Lamda Learning Management System (LMS), which supports coursework and progress tracking, ensuring students stay organized and connected throughout their studies.
He encouraged students to take advantage of these and other resources mentioned, which include everything from essential course materials to updates on events so they can “make the most of their time at Bar-Ilan. Remember, we are here to support you throughout your academic journey no matter what you need,” Swisa said.
Taking Your Studies to New Heights
Oz Nacker spoke about the Student Exchange program and emphasized its importance, explaining to the new students that the university offers them the opportunity to study abroad at partner universities in Europe and beyond. “This program is not only a chance to earn credits towards your degree but also to immerse yourself in different cultures and academic environments,” Nacker said. He encouraged students to explore the possibilities available to them, highlighting scholarships offered through the EU’s Erasmus Plus program that can help ease the financial burden of studying abroad.
Insight into Israel’s Complex Landscape
The StandWithUs organization, represented by Neta Fanta, introduced students to the Ambassadors’ Club, which enables students to deepen their understanding of Israel and its complexities. This program offers sessions on Israel’s history, regional dynamics, and diverse cultural identities.
“The main goal is for you to go back home equipped to speak knowledgeably about Israel and the complexities of this region,” Fanta said, “ and we encourage you to be active participants in this dialogue.” Students who attend at least seven of the eight sessions will receive a diploma from the Israeli Foreign Affairs Department, attesting to the program’s significance and thoroughness.
Looking Ahead
With a powerful mix of academic, cultural, and community resources, Bar-Ilan University has set the stage for international students to not only succeed academically but to grow as global citizens. As Dahan said, “You’ve made a great choice in coming here. Welcome, to what promises to be an extraordinary year at Bar-Ilan University. We look forward to being part of your journey.”
