A delegation of 14 Israeli energy scientists, led by Bar-Ilan University’s Prof. Doron Aurbach, Head of the Center for Energy and Sustainability, and Prof. David Zitoun, Head of the Chemistry Department, attended the first Morocco-Israel Bi-National Energy Initiative workshop in Marrakesh, Morocco, in March 2023. The workshop was hosted by the Materials Science, Energy, and Nanoengineering Department at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University.
This event brought together researchers, experts, and research students in the fields of energy harvesting, energy storage, and energy conversion, and was the first major initiative to come out of the Israel-Morocco energy cooperation signed in September 2022 at Bar-Ilan University – a welcome result of normalized relations between Israel and Morocco following the Abraham Accords of December 2020.
The consortium of energy scientists includes more than 30 from seven academic institutions in Israel and approximately 20 from five academic institutions in Morocco.

The three-day Energy Initiative Workshop provided a platform for sharing and networking, and featured several keynotes, regular presentations, panel discussions, posters, and interactive sessions, providing an excellent opportunity for participants to exchange ideas and explore opportunities. The workshop identified significant scientific partnerships, collaborations, and other impactful actions to strengthen the bi-national initiative.
This joint venture is currently funded by the Moroccan national phosphate company, OCP, and Israel’s Ministry of Energy.
Since the start of the Israel-Morocco energy cooperation, many new projects have been founded in which scientists from both sides participate in the topics of green energy, electric transportation, hydrogen economy, absorption of solar energy, and accumulation and conversion of energy in large volumes.
As part of the collaboration, 15 outstanding, selected Moroccan graduate students from all the academic institutions that are partners in the Israel-Morocco agreement, will come to Israel during 2023 for research periods of six months and will be hosted by research groups in the Israeli institutions involved. During the last week of April, Bar-Ilan University welcomed the first four Moroccan students, who are being hosted by research groups from BIU’s Chemistry Department.
