As Israel marked the first anniversary of the tragic events of October 7, 2023, last month, Bar-Ilan University stood united in remembrance and solidarity with those who had been affected by the heinous attacks perpetrated by Hamas. The various memorial events during October, including those at Bar-Ilan, served as a poignant reminder of the lives lost, the hostages taken, and the ongoing struggles faced by families and communities in the wake of violence. Our thoughts were particularly with the Bar-Ilan students and faculty members who were murdered or had loved ones murdered that day, as well as those among us who have answered the call of duty, serving as reservists on the front lines in the fight for our nation’s security.
Bar-Ilan University faculty, staff, and students commemorate the October 7 attacks and remember the hostages
More than 100 individuals remain in captivity in Gaza and, while some hostages have been released, the pain of separation lingers for many. We honor their courage and resilience, and we stand in solidarity with the families whose lives have been irreversibly changed. As a community, we continue to support one another, drawing strength from our shared experiences and commitment to the values that unite us.
As of October 31, we have officially opened the doors of Bar-Ilan University for the new academic year and with this new beginning, we embrace a spirit of renewal and hope. The orientation day was a vibrant testament to our resilience, filled with soldiers, newly arrived Israeli students, olim (immigrant) students, and international students eager to embark on their academic journeys. This year, nearly 800 international students and researchers have either returned to Bar-Ilan or begun their studies with us, showcasing the university’s commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive community.

In these challenging times, we are reminded of the power of education, dialogue, and collaboration. Bar-Ilan University remains a beacon of knowledge and a hub for innovation, standing firm against adversity. Together, we will honor the memory of those we have lost while fostering a future filled with hope and opportunity.
As we move forward, let us continue to support one another and strive for peace, understanding, and healing within our community and beyond.
