Sharing Teaching Methodology and Mutual Exchange

Bar-Ilan University (BIU) and Lodz University of Technology (TUL) in Poland have signed an Erasmus agreement to encourage faculty and student exchange between the two universities. They will also be sharing expertise in various areas that will impact faculty members, staff, and students at both universities.

In August 2022, Ofer Dahan, Director of BIU’s International School, met with the representatives of TUL’s International Cooperation Centre (ICC), and other faculty and department heads in Lodz. The focus was on faculty and student exchange with a special interest in the Faculty of Chemistry and the joint Master’s degree in Chemoinformatics.

“The outcome of our meetings is that Lodz University wants to collaborate in two main areas – mutual research and guidance in advanced teaching methodologies,” said Dahan. “But they’re also interested in our joint Master’s degree programs as well as staff and student exchange.”

The collaboration would start with four or five Bar-Ilan experts in advanced teaching methodologies (specifically in the areas of chemistry and engineering) to work with TUL for at least three months in the beginning. The experts would work in a hybrid format – approx. one week a month at TUL and the balance remotely (depending on an agreed schedule).

Dahan arranged an initial Zoom meeting with all parties who would be involved in the collaboration.

“I invited some of Bar-Ilan’s best people in advanced teaching methodology – Yuval Shraibman from our Teaching and Learning Division, and Dr. Keren Goldfrad from the Faculty of Education – and on the research side, Prof. Rachel Dekel, Academic Head of BIU’s International School and a professor in the School of Social Work. We were joined by two professors from our Department of Chemistry – Department Head, Prof. David Zitoun, and Prof. Hanoch Senderowitz, each a specialist in his field,” he said.

“The results of the Zoom meeting were extremely encouraging and we decided to move forward with mutual cooperation regarding all areas discussed, including the teaching methodologies with a focus on developing a teaching plan in the field of chemistry and chemoinformatics, mutual research in different disciplines, and staff exchange,” said Dahan.

“We are delighted to start the cooperation between BIU and TUL, as it is going to be based on specific assumptions and goals,” said Dorota Piotrowska, Director of TUL’s International Cooperation Centre.

“We have found common ground in many scientific and didactic projects. The partnership with BIU will provide an excellent opportunity to share good practices, both in the scientific and organizational fields. We are convinced that we will be able to build a permanent relationship between our universities – drawing on each other’s achievements,” she said.

BIU’s International School and TUL’s ICC Office will work together to strengthen and expand the relationship between the two universities.

“Whenever I visit a university, my aim is to return with something concrete, and I’m happy to say, this visit was a great success,” Dahan said. “We, at the International School, are the facilitators and negotiators between Bar-Ilan University and universities abroad. We meet with the relevant people, departments, and faculties from these universities; discuss the options for different types of agreements and mutual projects; and then connect them with our top people – management, professors, departments, and faculties – who then decide how they want to work together.

“I’m proud to say that our team at the International School has connected Bar-Ilan with many of the top universities throughout Europe, the UK, North America, and many other places, and we look forward to adding Lodz University of Technology to our international list of partners,” he said.
