Bar-Ilan University’s International School has been hosting a variety of interesting and successful virtual open days and information sessions for potential students from around the world. October was a busy month and the numerous sessions kept everyone busy and connected, some of which were recorded for students who weren’t able to attend.
Two specialized open days in English were held to help international students who are undecided about which area of study to follow. We grouped together different departments that are similar in nature in order to provide students with a variety of possibilities within their chosen fields.
Biblical Studies and Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology (LISA)
The first virtual open day focused on graduate and postgraduate studies in Biblical Studies and Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology (LISA). Two events were held to accommodate the different time zones.
The main difference between the morning and evening sessions were the alumni students who volunteered their time to give participants a student’s perspective of studying in Israel at Bar-Ilan University. If you missed these sessions, you can watch the following video recordings.
Students who participated in the Bible Studies and LISA – Morning Session included Rev. Dr. ShinAe Kim, a PhD Alum of BIU’s Bible Department and Adjunct Professor of the Methodist Theological University in Seoul; and Vanessa Workman, a current PhD Student in BIU’s Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology (LISA) department.
Students who participated in the Bible Studies and LISA – Evening Session included Dr. Dominick Hernández, a PhD Alum of BIU’s Bible Department, and Asst. Professor at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky; and James Mclellan, a current PhD student in the Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology (LISA).
Health and Medical Sciences
The theme for the second virtual open day was “Studying Health and Medical Sciences in Israel – The Land of Medical Innovation”. It was organized by our representative in India and was aimed at students in India.
Participants found out about international programs offered at Masters and Doctoral levels, the different areas of research and facilities at the state-of-the-art labs; scholarship opportunities and other resources offered to international students; among other topics.
Students participating in this session included BIU alum, Dr. Kolluru Devi Dutt Srikanth, who completed his PhD in Molecular Neurobiology; and Radhika Sain, a current PhD student of Structural Biology.

Personal Story: Dr. Jinsan Kim
Other October events included Bar-Ilan’s participation in the Embassy of Israel in Seoul’s “Online Study in Israel Week”. Various faculty members in different departments presented their undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate degrees, and BIU alum, Dr. Jinsan Kim from South Korea, spoke about his experience as a Biblical Studies doctoral student. You can listen to what he had to say here.
Latin American Events
Numerous events took place in Latin America at various high schools and universities. They included a university fair in Mexico with eight Israeli universities; and a virtual open session with students from Costa Rica, Peru, Brazil, and Venezuela; and focused sessions with the Bet Yaakov School in Brazil and the Colegio Moral Y Luces Herzl Bialik in Venezuela.
High School in Turkey
And finally, a special presentation was hosted by Bar-Ilan University for the Ulus Jewish High School in Turkey. Students were given an overview of all the undergraduate programs available at Bar-Ilan, as well a preview of the Mechina (Preparatory) one-year program for students wishing to learn Hebrew, get to know Bar-Ilan, and connect with Israel.
