As part of the UK’s Global Business Innovation Program (GBIP), business leaders working in the global community of industrial clean growth visited Bar-Ilan University last month. The visit was organized and led by Innovate UK, Innovate UK EDGE, and the British Embassy in Israel.
The goal of the visit was for the companies to use it as “an opportunity to engage with key stakeholders from the clean growth tech industry, hear cutting-edge ideas, discover new interests, and network with other professionals who share a similar appetite for forward-focused collaboration.”
The nine companies represented included Bartech, Bohr Green Energy, CCell Renewables, CO-YOU, Cyclopic, Encend.IO, Milvus Advanced, Nellie Technologies, and TelosNRG.
Prof. Shulamit Michaeli, BIU’s Vice-President for Research, introduced the group to Bar-Ilan University, spoke about the groundbreaking research and innovation coming out of the impact centers and research laboratories, and presented the Bar-Ilan Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials (BINA). She was joined by Dr. Moshe Goldberg, Administrative Manager at BIU’s new Center for Energy and Sustainability, and Dr. Hagit Aviv from the Department of Chemistry.
The delegates then met with research partners from BIU’s National Institute for Sustainable Energy and were taken on a tour of the laboratories with Prof. David Zitoun, Head of the Department of Chemistry, and Prof. Malachi Noked, also from the Department of Chemistry.
Dr. Aviv led a tour of BIU’s agrovoltaic farm, which is part of a collaboration with the Doral Group, an entrepreneurial company in the field of renewable energy. This collaboration has enabled Bar-Ilan to set up the first solar-agriculture research project of its kind in Israel on the university grounds for cultivating potato crops. Solar panels installed within the field produce renewable energy while maintaining crop productivity.
Ran Goldstein, Manager of BIU’s Center for Smart Cities, an ecosystem for smart city development, spoke about the center in which scientists, entrepreneurs, municipalities, solution providers, and citizens work together to better understand the city’s needs and find appropriate solutions. The university campus acts as a living lab, where researchers and solution providers can test their ideas and solutions and get feedback from citizens.
