Bar-Ilan University offers a wide range of possibilities for pursuing an advanced degree in English Literature. This two-to-three-year program gives students a chance to expand their knowledge of British and American literature and literary theory, and develop high-level academic writing and research skills applicable to a variety of professions.

In addition to high-level courses in literary theory and advanced academic writing, students in the program can choose from a range of graduate seminars focused on literary topics from the classic to the contemporary.

  • BA or equivalent. (GPA 85 and above). Official transcripts must be submitted with application.
  • Personal resume/CV.
  • Separate list (including grades), in English, of all courses taken in literature.
  • Writing sample of an academic essay written in English – preferably on a topic related to literature.
  • Short (up to one page) statement of purpose explaining why the student wants to pursue a graduate degree in English.

Students who did not major in English literature or a related field in their previous degrees will be asked to take prerequisite courses. The number and nature of prerequisites (up to a full year) will be determined based on the student’s academic background.

During their degree, students are also required to take 1-2 Jewish Studies courses or 1-2 general elective courses.

  • Teaching: Opportunities to teach English literature at high schools or language schools, or to work in programs focused on ESL (English as a Second Language).
  • Publishing: Roles in editing, literary criticism, or publishing in various formats, including books, journals, or online platforms
  • Creative Writing: Pursuing a career as a novelist, poet, or playwright, possibly through writing workshops or literary festivals
  • Content Creation and Marketing: Creating content for websites, blogs, or social media, focusing on literature, culture, or education.
  • Media and Journalism: Writing articles, reviews, or essays for newspapers, magazines, or online publications.
